Divorce Coach and Child Specialist during the Collaborative Divorce Process
Collaborative Practice, including Collaborative Law and interdisciplinary Collaborative Divorce, is a way for couples to resolve disputes respectfully, without going to court, while working with trained professionals in areas important to your life. After selecting a Collaborative Practice Attorney, couples may work with a trained mental health professional, like Dr. Santoro, to assist them with navigating the process of divorce and with making difficult decisions about child custody and visitation schedules. Dr. Santoro can serve as a Divorce Coach or a Child Specialist.
As a Divorce Coach, Dr. Santoro focuses on assisting clients in navigating the process of their Collaborative Divorce. The Divorce Coach is part of the collaborative team working towards a Collaborative Divorce. Coaches also work both individually with their clients and together with the collaborative team.
As a Child Specialist, Dr. Santoro serves in a neutral role on the Collaborative Divorce Team. The Child Specialist’s role is to identify the needs of the children and use that information to help inform decisions and choices made by the parents about how the children’s time should be split between the two parental homes. The Child Specialist also works with parents to create a visitation schedule, but does not recommend or decide on issues of custody. Instead, the Child Specialist facilitates discussion between the parents, often in collaboration with the Coaches, so the parents are able to develop a visitation schedule that is developmentally appropriate, addresses the children’s needs, and is in the best interest of the children.
Dr. Santoro is a member of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals (IACP) and of the Howard County Collaborative Professionals (HCCP).
